Despite superior writing, the slide in sales continued and 2007 was pivotal because Spawn for the very first time was out of the Top 100, finishing 106th with #173 at the end of the year. An elaborate April Fool's joke backfired and a very well written spinoff appeared.
Spawn #164
January 2007
Conclusion to Spawn I
This is it, the final story in the beginning of the year to wrap up the whole saga of Spawn. From #166 onward, there would be another world of Spawn, a darker world. It is to be a complete overhaul of the original storytelling with cinematic and psychological style horror...I am sold!

What a brave and bold world the McFarlane Empire is entering. Spawn I comes to an end and now we have a story that breaks continuity! This issue introduce the very popular collectible figure of Mandarin Spawn aka Cheng Lie. Gosh, what is going to be the next move? The end of Spawn ;)
The cover of #165 is that of Mandarin Spawn 1 but the inside art is of Mandarin Spawn 2. The story is set in the period of the Southern Sung dynasty but the hairstyle of the soldiers are definitely that of the Qing dynasty. See enlarged image here.

The Death of Spawn
An elaborate joke about the Death of Spawn was announced on March 30th 2007 starting with issue #172. The joke may be elaborate but it is also meant to be obvious, such as when the titles of the crossovers for this event were announced: Hellish Comics #685, Spawn: The Man from Hell #18, Legion of Cybernetic Animals #285...etc. Unfortunately this 'death' joke was announced while the comics industry is still talking about the death of Captain America and it comes a bit too close for comfort for many critics. I personally like the joke, especially when it was announced that the death of Spawn would spin 4 new other Spawns!
Hellish Comics #687
Human Spawn - "Al Simmons was a human from the planet Earth, and this new Spawn claims to be a human as well! Is he really from the same planet as Al? Only time will tell if this new Spawn is friend or foe!"
Spawn: The Man From Hell #22
Steel Spawn - "Henry Johnson was your average electrical engineer and amateur armorsmith. When he heard that the mighty Spawn had fallen, he built his own suit of powered armor, put on a red cape, and took to the streets to fight crime!"
Spawn #176
Cyborg Spawn - "As a government assassin, Al Simmons used the latest in high-tech weaponry. This new Spawn is MADE of high-tech weaponry! He's super-strong, super-tough, and super-hard to stop! Also, for some reason, he's a gorilla."
The Adventures of Spawn #501
Spawnboy - Chris is a normal kid, with normal problems: homework, bullies, and constant attacks from an unending horde of demons from Hell! Fortunately, he also has the power of Spawn on his side. Can he keep this awesome secret from his parents, teachers, and friends? Does he ever break the curse of the Hellspawn? Will he pass his finals? Find out in The Adventures of Spawn!

Adventures of Spawn Secret Files

The Forces of Light not only dastardly robbed poor Raven Spawn of his power source, they created more Spawns. There are 9 of them but only two are mentioned here: Wings of Redemption Spawn, a distant cousin of Redeemer and Gunslinger Spawn who went mad at the dead star Cor'Nova.

Nyx re-appeared as She-Spawn in a guest appearance with Bomb Queen. This time she needn't borrowed it surreptitiously from Al Simmons' Spawn, she got a piece of the cape that helps her to transform whenever she needs it. Enlarged images of both the cover and the art.
So, is Desarak a Spawn? He told Nyx "we hellspawns must stick together"! The answer? No, he is not a Hellspawn, he is an Earth Demon.
